Meeting theme: Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate Changes Health

We invite all APHA members to be primary members of the Health Administration section and welcome all new, returning and continuing members to submit abstracts for the 2017 APHA Annual Meeting in Atlanta!   Health Administration is the right section for you if you have an interest in:
  • assuring the highest quality public health practice;
  • identifying important issues in the advancement of leadership, administration, management, and best practices in health delivery systems; and,
  • seeking solutions that positively impact the health of the communities in which we live, work, and play.

The Health Administration section is also the right place for you if you value nurturing, supporting, training and exchanging information with public health practitioners, academic public health programs, and healthcare administrators of all disciplines, while publicly advocating for the highest quality health practice based on sound administrative and scientific principles. 


Abstracts should identify specific administrative and leadership challenges in health administration practice related to ensuring the right to health. We encourage submissions that focus on best practices, promising models for the future, and instructive lessons learned for improvement, sustainability, and equitable distribution of healthcare services.  Student-centered work, which includes an award for an Outstanding Student Submission, is highly encouraged.  

We are pleased to collaborate again this year with the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice for our Research to Practice Award.  This award welcomes best examples of current research that has effectively been put into the practice of health administration and management.  We encourage submissions that demonstrate translation of research findings to inform decision making and action by public health practice and policy stakeholders.  Submissions should also address the development of new, innovative dissemination strategies for translating research into practice, and/or demonstrated achievement of research findings being utilized beyond peer reviewed manuscripts. Submitting abstract authors may indicate their interest in applying or nominating another author for the award. The selected awardee will be invited by the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice to submit their work as an invited article in an upcoming issue and will be recognized at the Section Awards Reception.  

The topic areas below represent broad categories of interest that garner significant numbers of abstracts relevant to the business interests of the section. As abstracts are selected, topic areas will be narrowed to create sessions where like abstract content will be assigned.  Please select the broad topic area that you believe your research best fits or near fits.   We welcome all abstract submissions and the opportunity to create an educational program for Health Administration section members that enhances their expertise, knowledge and application of cutting edge research in their respective health practice disciplines. 

Health Administration general topic areas of interest for the 2017 APHA Annual Meeting include:      

  • Challenges and opportunities to improving quality in health services and programs.
  • Challenges and opportunities to working across health and other economic sectors to improve community health and health outcomes
  • Climate change collaborations: Partnerships that effectively mitigate the impact of climate change events
  • Climate changes health: Addressing climate change through programs, initiatives and policies that create healthier communities
  • Collaborative efforts in health administration, management, and cross-sector policies that improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes
  • Evaluating administrative, management and policy functions of health organizations: Ensuring quality at the foundational level.
  • Going green: Practices and policies that promote a healthier workplace
  • Hot topics for health administrators
  • Impacts/implications of the Affordable Care Act3.
  • Innovations in health administration and leadership.
  • International perspectives on health administration, management and policy development
  • Local public health department accreditation: Lessons learned from engaging in the PHAB accreditation process.
  • Partnerships for improving healthcare services, delivery, and outcomes
  • Policies, programs and systems for improving health equity
  • Programs and initiatives that effectively address the professional development needs of the healthcare workforce.
  • The impact of climate change events on local health department budgets
Please click on the "Submit Abstract" link at the bottom of the page and select one of the topics above. If you are proposing multiple papers to comprise an entire panel or session (i.e. a session proposal), please consult with the program planning chair before submission; all such session proposals need to be approved by the program planning chair in advance.


Continuing Education Credit

APHA values the ability to provide continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, health educators, health administrators, and those certified in public health at its annual meeting. Please complete all required information when submitting an abstract so members can claim credit for attending your session. These credits are necessary for members to maintain licenses and/or credentials. For a session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credit, each presenter, panelist, discussant, and/or faculty must provide:

1) an abstract free of trade and/or commercial product names.

2) at least one MEASURABLE SINGLE objective (“to understand” or “to learn” are not measurable objectives and compound objectives are not acceptable). Use ONLY the following Measurable Action Verbs: Explain, Demonstrate, Analyze, Formulate, Discuss, Compare, Differentiate, Describe, Name, Assess, Evaluate, Identify, Design, Define or List.

3) A signed Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form with a relevant /acceptable qualification statement;

Example of Acceptable Biographical Qualification Statement(I have been the principal or co-principal investigator of multiple federally funded grants focusing on the epidemiology of drug abuse, HIV prevention and co-occurring mental and drug use disorders. Among my scientific interests has been the development of strategies for preventing HIV and STDs in out-of-treatment drug users.)

Please note that stating “I am a Principal Investigator/Project Coordinator of this project.” is not sufficient since it only gives submitter's job title or position. Please be sure to include the relevant information about your experience and/or background.

4) All continuing education learning content must be of sound science or professional practice and serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills and professional competence of the health professional. Learning content should be evidence-based if available. A list of over 30 areas will be provided online for you to choose from. You will be asked to choose at least one or up to 6 areas that your presentation will address.
