CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — APHA 2017 Annual Meeting & Expo

Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Late Breakers

Meeting theme: Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate Changes Health

Submission Deadline: Monday, July 10, 2017

Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section

The ICEHS Section is now accepting abstracts for late breaker sessions of the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association. The submission deadline is 11:59 pm PST on Monday, July 10, 2017.

Late breaker sessions are a forum for presenting research findings and programs that have been completed or transpired recently (i.e., since the February deadline of the original ICEHS Call for Abstracts). A brief statement should be included in the abstract (or in the expanded summary, described below) that justifies how the work meets this criterion of being "late-breaking". This is a particularly appropriate venue for student recently completed theses and dissertation work. Given the high quality of latebreaker submissions in past years, this year we have reserved extra poster sessions and oral slots to accommodate strong late breaker submissions. Authors with waitlisted abstracts are welcome to use this time to strengthen their abstract submissions and resubmit under latebreakers. Authors taking advantage of this avenue should withdraw their waitlisted abstract either before or at the time of their new submission.

Abstracts may be related to prevention and control of injuries and violence in all settings; delivery and evaluation of emergency health services; and issues related to emergency preparedness and population safety. We welcome abstracts on all unintentional and intentional injury topics. Abstracts specific to the meeting's theme are encouraged. Three items are particularly important to include: Abstract (250 words), learning objective (at least one) and presenter qualifications (75 words or fewer). An expanded abstract is highly recommended.

Abstracts must have no more than 250 words (structured as: Background/Purpose, Methods, Results/Outcomes, and Conclusions). An expanded summary must be submitted with the abstract. The average length of an expanded summary is 500 words (maximum limit of 2,000). Its purpose is to provide additional information to help reviewers judge the relevance and quality of work submitted. It should not repeat the abstract material, but instead should provide complementary details about the work.

You must also include at least one clear, MEASURABLE learning objective with your submission. Detailed instructions for writing learning objectives, including a list of acceptable measurable action words, can be found on the abstract submission page. Learning objectives are not included in the word count. The expanded summary software will not accept tables or figures.

Individuals who present abstracts at the Annual Meeting must be members of the APHA. Abstracts must be submitted through APHA's website.

Submissions will be reviewed and scored by ICEHS section members to ensure high quality scientific submissions are selected for presentation at the meeting. The following criteria will be used to score submissions: 1) ability to advance the practice/knowledge base of ICEHS; 2) importance and originality of work; 3) overall clarity and appeal; 4) clearly defined objectives, purpose and methods; 5) data and statistical analysis are included; 6) conclusions are supported by data; 7) programs/policies are suitable for replication; and 8) completeness and quality of the expanded summary.

Student Paper Award Competition and Presentation Award Competition: The purpose of the Student Paper Award is to foster and reward quality research efforts of student members of the ICEHS section. To be eligible for the award, the student must be a member of the ICEHS section. (When joining APHA, students can join one section free of charge). In addition to the Student Paper Award, there are other student presentation awards for oral or poster sessions. To be eligible for any of the awards, please check the student box and/or please consider this abstract for a student award. To qualify for the competition, students must be currently enrolled or have completed their degree program within the last year.

Abstracts eligible for student Awards are submitted through the online APHA abstract submission process in accordance with APHA guidelines, which require that the work be original, unpublished, and not have been previously presented at a professional meeting.

Both regular deadline and late-breaker abstracts qualify for consideration if the student meets the respective submission deadline AND indicates an interest in having their abstract considered for an award. To be eligible for any of the awards, please check the box indicating you would like your abstract to be considered for a student award. (To indicate such interest, on the TITLE screen (Step 2 of the submission process), check the "YES" button on the "Consider This Paper For An Award" question (located in the "Presenting Author and Award Submission" box). Use the pull-down menu to select "Student Paper Award."

Following notice of acceptance of the abstract for either oral or poster presentation by the Scientific Program Chair, applicants must submit a completed manuscript by September 1, 2017. The completed manuscript will be reviewed for the Student Paper Award. For additional information regarding the Student Paper Award competition, review guidelines and information on the ICEHS website or contact the Student Award Committee Co-Chairs, Dr. Kathleen Carlson (Kathleen.Carlson@va.gov) or Dr. Doug Wiebe (dwiebe@exchange.upenn.edu).
