Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a public health approach used to deliver early intervention and treatment services for people with substance use disorders (SUD) and those at risk of developing these disorders. NORC has been funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to develop curricula and increase training opportunities in adolescent SBIRT within undergraduate and graduate social work and nursing programs. NORC partnered with the Council on Social Work Education, Center for Clinical Social Work, and American Association of Colleges of Nursing to support the integration of adolescent SBIRT into required course work in educational programs across the U.S. The presentation will discuss progress on engaging a national Learning Collaborative (70+ schools, 150+ educators, field placement supervisors, preceptors, practitioners, and students) and Steering Committee (30+ subject matter experts, educators and practitioners, and professional associations) to develop, implement, and evaluate an adolescent SBIRT curricula which includes an Adolescent SBIRT Toolkit and interactive virtual patient/client simulation training program. The presentation will also discuss the barriers and facilitators to integrating adolescent SBIRT education in social work, nursing, and interprofessional programs, and how providing technical assistance to programs encourages sustainable practice over time.
