Elements Essential to Sustainability

Marcia Ory, PhD, MPH
School of Public Health, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX

APHA 2017 Annual Meeting & Expo (Nov. 4 - Nov. 8)

As part of the invited symposium, “Evolution from Innovation to Inculcation: The Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence in Program Innovation” this presentation will help set the context by providing a framework for understanding essential elements that lead innovative programs to become sustainable. Building upon early work by Evashwick and Ory, factors associated with long-term sustainability will be highlighted, with attention to whether, and in what manner, innovative programs can achieve long-term sustainability. Additionally, models for sustainability research and practice will be discussed with relevance to the Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence case studies, including lessons learned from Active for Life, an early recognition program, designed to translate evidence-based physical activity programs into practice. The evolution of Active for Life will be discussed, including strategies employed for balancing adaptation, fidelity, and sustainability.

Sustainability in University-Community Collaborations: Lessons from Fit & Strong!

APHA 2017 Annual Meeting & Expo (Nov. 4 - Nov. 8)

As part of the invited symposium, “Evolution from Innovation to Inculcation: The Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence in Program Innovation” this presentation will use examples from the development and testing of the nationally recognized Fit & Strong, formerly Senior Health Alliance Promoting Exercise, a multi-component, evidence-based physical activity program for older adults. Using Fit & Strong as a framework for a review of critical factors that facilitate innovative collaborations between a university and a community, the presentation will review steps to be completed in the design stage of an innovation, including the significance of the issue, the feasibility of the program components and the likelihood of translatability into practice. The presentation will also explain what is meant by the term “evidence-based”, including steps that have been taken by an academic team to achieve that designation, and the value of that designation to a Community Based Organization (CBO) that is considering offering the program. Finally, it will highlight the impact of national recognition like the Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence, and the ability to meet the criteria of national certifying bodies on the spread of evidence-based innovations.

APHA 2017 Annual Meeting & Expo (Nov. 4 - Nov. 8)

As part of the invited symposium, “Evolution from Innovation to Inculcation: The Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence in Program Innovation” this presentation will discuss the framework for the continuation of the 2001 Archstone Foundation Award winner, Groceries-to-Go, over time and through new non-profit sponsorship. Groceries to Go was designed to provide weekly shopping and delivery service for persons 60 and older in the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota, known for brutal winters; thereby, enabling older Minnesotans to remain in their homes and community. The presentation will review the transition process and capacity building outcomes accomplished through a Rural Aging Initiative. The capacity building process will include service stabilization and integration, strategic planning to expand programming, and connecting with stakeholders to maintain and strengthen networks. The presentation will also compare similarities and differences of rural and urban service models.
