This paper will discuss the development, implementation and initial evaluation of a trauma-informed primary and secondary school-based program for teachers in Cook County, Illinois (the largest of Illinois’ 102 counties). Numerous studies document an increase in the pervasiveness of trauma among school age children, as well as the subsequent effects of trauma on student’s overall performance. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are the root cause of many serious academic, social and behavioral problems that have the potential to prevent a child from receiving the full benefits of education. Teachers are key players in helping schools become trauma-informed learning environments. The teacher program was developed through a collaboration between the University of Illinois-Extension Cook County Community Health team, teachers and local experts in the field. The program includes a series of four modules which cover the following topics: 1) the ways trauma affects physical, mental, and emotional health, 2) the role of self-care in preventing burnout, 3) tools which can be utilized in building a compassionate classroom, and 4) identifying and responding to signs of mental health challenges among youth. Initial results (n=166) from pre/post/3 month follow-up evaluation with teachers demonstrate increased knowledge, self-awareness, and confidence in addressing classroom trauma and enacting self-care. Initial process evaluation results demonstrate high-levels of program feasibility and acceptability among participants. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of key lessons learned, recommendations, plans for multi-sector investment, and future directions for supporting and strengthening school health in Cook County and the state of Illinois.
