Completing a degree program and successfully passing a comprehensive certification exam are achievements in establishing the identity of a public health education practitioner. The purpose of professional certification is to ensure a high level of competence in the health education workforce. Maintenance of national certifications is supported by continued training in the knowledge and methods of the health education and promotion field. The need for Continuing Competency is a direct response to requirements of accreditation as well as public expectation of the competency of certified individuals and the best practices of the industry.
The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) continues to strive for recognition as a premier credentialing organization and is committed to aligning all processes in accordance with recognized certification industry standards. As the current market appears to be inundated with new opportunities for certifications, it becomes increasingly important to recognize that there are standards in credentialing that can be affirmed by third-party accreditation. Certification processes used by NCHEC are accredited by not just one, but two accrediting bodies, the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and also the International Accreditation Service (IAS). Both NCCA and IAS accreditation standards now include continuing competence measurements.
The requirements for recertification of Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) and Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES) are being revised to reflect the demonstration of continuing competence. Presenters will (1) describe the movement within credentialing organizations and public advocacy groups to ensure the “Continuing Competency” of certified professionals; (2)discuss approved policy changes for recertification which will reflect an assessment of continued competency for the CHES and MCHES certifications; (3)articulate the importance of aligning recertification requirements with accreditation standards of certification organizations; and (4) discuss a pilot project on the new continuing competency assessment for Category 1 offerings at a live event.
