CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — APHA's 2019 Annual Meeting and Expo

Early-Career Professional

Meeting theme: Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health

Submission Deadline: Sunday, March 3, 2019

The Early-Career Professionals Membership Group (ECP) represents recent public health graduates and former APHA student members to promote professional development, career building and networking for up to 3 years after graduation. It is the ECP’s goal to highlight the exceptional research of those new to their public health career and provide opportunities to showcase this work.

2019 Early-Career Professionals Poster Submissions

This year, the ECP committee invites ECP members to submit abstracts for posters for the 147th APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Philadelphia, PA, November 2 – November 6, 2019.  This year the conference will explore the theme “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health.” In keeping with this theme, proposals that focus on health science in action will be especially welcomed. Early-career professionals are encouraged to submit abstracts addressing one of the three topics below. All poster sessions will occur simultaneously, therefore a presenting author may only present one poster. Submissions are limited to members of the ECP.

  • On-going projects, programs, or initiatives led by ECPs
    On-going projects/programs/initiatives started during an ECP’s time as an ECP (within 2 years of graduating) in which the ECP plays a pivotal role. This role capitalizes on skills and competencies developed from the ECP’s earning of an academic degree that serve as a foundation for future career work. Not to include capstone projects or any other research while enrolled in a graduate program.
  • Reflections of innovative examples of emerging leadership roles held by ECP’s and how they relate to public health as a field
  • Topics that highlight the role of and/or the need for ECPs that align with the conference theme “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health.”
ECP posters accepted for exhibition will also be posted on the ECP Online Community so that all ECP members will have the opportunity to learn from their peers. Authors will be contacted via email by June 1, 2019 regarding poster abstract selection for exhibition. Submission of an abstract to the ECP is an expression of the author's intention to attend the Annual Meeting and exhibiting their work, should it be accepted for a poster session. Presenters must be APHA (ECP) members at the time of the meeting, and they will also be expected to register for the annual meeting in August. Currently, ECP does not offer any stipends to cover the cost of registration, poster printing, or travel.

Structured Abstract Format: Abstracts should be submitted in a structured format. Please use one of the following two formats:

  • Background: Study objectives, hypothesis, or a description of the problem;
  • Methods: Study design, including a description of participants, procedures, measures, and appropriate statistical analyses; dates of data collection;
  • Results: Specific results in summary form; and
  • Conclusions: Description of the main outcome of the study.

An alternative format, suited for abstracts about policy, programs, interventions, and other types of research evaluations, may be used:

  • Issues: A short summary of the issue(s) addressed;
  • Description: Description of the project, experience, service, or advocacy program;
  • Lessons Learned: A brief description of the results of the project; and
  • Recommendations: A brief statement of next steps.

Abstracts should be 300 words or less and cannot refer to web pages or URLs. All abstracts will be reviewed based on relevance to the conference theme and/or the ECP topics above, noteworthiness of problem, and quality of design, methods, and interpretation. All submissions will end at 11:59 p.m. PST on the due date listed on the Call for Abstracts Web page: https://apha.confex.com/apha/2019/solicit8.epl. No late submissions will be accepted. All abstracts must be submitted online through APHA’s easy-to-use online platform.
