The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the leading cause of death among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa and the second leading cause of death among adolescents globally, yet this population is not expressly targeted in HIV prevention interventions and services. Consequently, there is a dearth of appropriate interventions and services that expressly focus on adolescent HIV prevention needs and the stages of their development. Identifying the express HIV prevention needs of adolescents, integrating adolescent developmental factors into the overall context of HIV prevention, and removing barriers to participation in these efforts are critical to providing HIV prevention interventions and services that work for adolescents. This presentation seeks to discuss HIV prevention among adolescents in developing countries. It focuses on the HIV prevention continuum, assesses the extent of adolescent participation in the various steps of the continuum, presents of some of the barriers to adolescent participation in HIV prevention, and provides recommendations on how to eliminate the barriers in order to increase adolescent participation in HIV prevention in developing countries, bearing adolescent developmental stages in mind.
