This invited session will provide an overall introduction to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Then speakers will describe to the audience the grant application process at NIH starting from identifying the appropriate funding opportunity followed by the steps after submitting the application and the peer review process, and will discuss different techniques for successful grant writing, explain the main review components, provide hints for a successful grant application, and address areas of emphasis. Further this session will explain the different grant funding mechanisms and provide examples of NIH FOAs in the areas of aging research and minority health.

This presentation will describe to the audience the grant review process and clarify what happens to the application once it is submitted to NIH and explain the process during the review meeting until the final approval of an award. Examples of NIA applications in Behavioral and Social Sciences will be provided. The presenter will describe how the NIA ensures a competent and thorough review of each type of application. Advice on what to do if an application is not funded the first time will be addressed.

This presentation will provide an overview of the grant application process at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Audience members will learn how to navigate the NIH system to identify funding opportunity announcements (FOAs), the steps of the application process, and how to identify the appropriate Program Officer (PO) of the selected FOA and when to contact a PO. Further this presentation will clarify common terms used in FOAs and at NIH. Minority Health and Health Disparities FOAs will be discussed.

This presentation will focus on a discussion of some common funding mechanisms currently peer reviewed at NIH. Emphasis will be placed on selecting the right mechanism for an applicant’s career timing and trajectory as well as some pre-submission hints and tips to facilitate the application process. Examples of funding opportunity announcements (FOA) from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) will be provided.
