CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — APHA's 2019 Annual Meeting and Expo

Public Health Nursing

Meeting theme: Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health

Submission Deadline: Thursday, February 28, 2019

The Public Health Nursing Section welcomes and invites individual abstracts and full session proposals for 2019 encompassing a public health focus, including:
  • Championing Social Justice
  • Encouraging Population-Based Prevention and Health Promotion
  • Engaging Leadership and Advocacy
  • Health Promotion Strategies
  • Researching Public Health and Evidence-Based Intervention
  • Targeting Population Health
Full Session Proposals addressing the PHN Section Strategic Priorities are also welcome. Full Sessions are 90 minutes long and require a session coordinator (usually an abstract author) and 3-5 individually submitted abstracts. Full session abstracts are reviewed through the regular submission process. Full session proposals must indicate to which full session they belong (the easiest way to do this is to include the topic in the abstract title). In addition to the above, topics may include:  
  • Academic and Practice Partnerships;
  • Disaster Preparation, Response, and Recovery;
  • Environmental Health; Global Health;
  • Immigrant and Refugee Health;
  • Maternal -Child Health;
  • Public Health Nursing Education; 
  • School Health;
  • Substance Abuse Prevention; and
  • Violence Prevention

Abstract Format

Limit abstracts to 250 words, using one of three formats:

1. Research:

  • Background
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusions

2. Lessons-learned:

  • Background/ Issue
  • Description
  • Lessons Learned
  • Implications/recommendations

3. Narrative:

  • Statement of the problem
  • Approach
  • Product/outcome
  • Implications

Review Criteria

All abstracts will be blind-reviewed by 2-3 reviewers using the following criteria:

  1. Importance of the issue
  2. Innovative methods
  3. Soundness of the science
  4. Substantive nature of the work
  5. Compelling conclusions

Abstracts may be submitted for oral, poster, roundtable, or full session proposals, although the Program Planners may reassign requested formats to make best use of the Section's limited sessions. Presenting authors must be APHA members and register for attendance at the Annual Meeting.

Continuing Education Credit for Sessions:

For a session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credit, each abstract must:

1) be free of trade and/or commercial product names

2) have at least one measurable objective written in action terms

3) include a signed Conflict of Interest (Disclosure) form with a relevant Qualification Statement.
