Located in each of the 10 public health regions, U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration-funded, university-based Public Health Training Centers work with state and local partners to provide technical assistance and training to the public health and health care workforce and students, with a specific focus on Medically Underserved Populations.

In Region 1, New England Public Health Training Center (NEPHTC) partners with Region 1 APHA state affiliates (PHAs) to conduct trainings. Maine PHA and NEPHTC have elevated the quality and delivery of workforce development, reaching thousands of public health practitioners across Region 1, offering topics such as bias in public health data and an infectious disease epidemiology series. During 2020, the partnership adapted to the demands of the time, resulting in 12 online learning events with 2,406 enrollees in direct response to the pandemic. Across these trainings, 97% of attendees reported improved understanding of subject matter, 84% identified actions they could take to apply the information in their work, 97% agreed the information was presented clearly, and 98% reported overall satisfaction with the training. Maine PHA also led the region’s research in online conference platforms, and with NEPHTC’s assistance, launched a four-week virtual conference in October, with nearly 400 attendees. This session will describe the benefits, challenges and lessons learned from the partnership between PHAs and PHTCs, providing a case study of the activities and participation growth arising from Maine PHA and NEPHTC’s longstanding partnership. Participants will learn about PHAs and PHTCs and how to partner with their regional entities.
