HOSA is a nationally recognized Career and Technical Student Organization that operates inside schools. HOSA is an integral part of career technical education and academic curriculum. California HOSA (Cal-HOSA) started its prevention, early identification, and early intervention project in 2018. This project illustrates a mental healthcare framework to address the risk factors associated with mental health issues, and suicide ideation among adolescents. The aim of this study was to explore Cal-HOSA students' participation in, and behaviors towards practicing and promoting mental wellness in schools and communities. A total of 94 semi-structured interviews were done with students enrolled in Cal-HOSA's 10 pilot school sites. Overall, we found that Cal-HOSA students were more likely to demonstrate positive attitudes consistent with being well-informed and active participants in experiential learning activities. Our research has shown that schools can be ideal places to: (a) begin conversations about mental health that achieve a better understanding of risk factors and protective factors, (b) increase training opportunities for students and educators to develop knowledge and skills about prevention and early identification, and (c) improve awareness and promotion of mental health and wellness. In this session, we will demonstrate the Cal-HOSA Wellness Model with evidence supporting its program components in keeping students engaged, helping student's trajectory toward wellness, and helping students discover their career interests in mental/behavioral health.
