Abstract
President's junior leadership council - best practices in youth engagement and public health development
APHA 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo
Methods: The PJLC creates and disseminates public health campaigns by identifying key health issues that impact their communities. Students, under the mentorship of hospital staff, develop these health issues into impactful educational programming for local school districts and community projects. Through a monthly speaker series, students are exposed to a diverse array of healthcare careers and professionals. Students liaise with their schools to connect the hospital to important initiatives and volunteer in the community and hospital to promote health.
Results: PJLC-developed school-based programs have reached on average 10,000 students per year in surrounding communities over the past 15 years. The PJLC has maintained a competitive 19% acceptance rate over the past 3 years. Annual surveys and alumni testimonials reflect strong program satisfaction and lasting impact after graduation. Recent polls show that post-PJLC, 42% of alumni pursue a healthcare career. PJLC’s success has culminated in replication to 3 hospitals within the Northwell Health system over the past 2 years, doubling its membership.
Conclusion: The PJLC program is a model of youth engagement in public health. This program is engaging, rewarding, and impactful, supporting student career development, public health, and community engagement.
