Introduction: As homelessness and other forms of housing insecurity are currently on the rise in the US, the importance of housing as a key social determinant of health (SDOH) is increasingly recognized. Research is needed to examine and address the impact of housing on health outcomes and health equity. The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is advancing health equity through housing-focused research.

Description of Evidence: Informed by recent evidence reviews, portfolio analyses, and NINR’s strategic plan, NINR is engaged in several housing-related research initiatives. This session will describe these research initiatives.

Description of Program Activities: This presentation will describe how health and housing-focused research fits within NINR’s mission, research lenses, and strategic priorities. We will highlight recent NINR-led, housing-related initiatives. These include an initiative focused on research to evaluate the health impacts of pandemic-era housing policies and programs, as well as an initiative focused on research that leverages healthcare-community partnerships to address unmet social needs and adverse SDOH. The presentation will also describe other health and housing-related collaborations for which NINR participates to advance SDOH-related strategic priorities.

Conclusions: NINR is committed to growing a portfolio of research that is focused on housing as a social determinant of health in an effort to promote health equity. NINR is expanding housing-related initiatives through funding opportunities as well as intra- and interagency collaborations.

Recommendations: Investigators can find information about existing health and housing-related initiatives as well as upcoming initiatives and activities on NINR’s website: https://www.ninr.nih.gov.
