Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and one of the deadliest cancers for men and women. There are persistent disparities in CRC outcomes experienced by Black Americans, even though population-level CRC incidence has declined. Given persistent disparities, there is a benefit to improving communication with Black Americans about CRC screening options, benefits, and recommendations. Few studies have tested large pools of naturally generated (e.g., by users on social media) messages on the topic to determine if there are differences in content and stylistic features Black Americans prefer. We used NORC/AmeriSpeak to collect data from adults, aged 45 to 74 (N=2,186). Participants in the study viewed message pairs of uniquely selected messages from hundreds of thousands of online and social media messages about CRC. Participants selected messages they thought would be more effective (e.g., encourage people to follow screening recommendations) or shareable (e.g., pass along message to friends/family). Participants could also generate and provide their own messages if they did not have a strong preference for messages presented in pairs. In total, participants rated 30 pairs of messages from online/social media sources (n=68) or generated by other participants (n=25). Preliminary analyses identified several messages mentioning statistics or events specifically about Black communities as being preferred by Black Americans. Participants also generated hundreds of messages, though most considerably overlapped with previously identified content. We will present more detailed analysis of the survey for effectiveness and shareability, as well as analyses related to the features preferred by participants.
