Abstract
Addressing knowledge gaps using insights from a weekly environmental scan process
APHA 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo
Objective: As part of the iHeard health knowledge monitoring and response system, we conducted weekly environmental scans of local and national news media, health professional publications, community survey responses, and social media to identify emergent health topics.
Methods: Community survey responses came from local adults asked in a weekly mobile phone survey to identify health topics they have heard about: “What else have you heard, read or seen in the last week about COVID or other health issues?” Their open-ended responses were included among health information from other sources in a weekly environmental scan report. All health claims were evaluated for timeliness, accuracy, potential health impact, local relevance, and relevance to populations experiencing health disparities.
Findings: From March 22, 2023 to January 13, 2024, 554 media stories, 979 community responses, and 161 health professional publications were reviewed (mean = 37 items per week). This process informed the development of 100+ weekly alerts sent to local partners and community messengers, and more than 500 publicly available communication materials.
Conclusions/Implications: Dissemination of this localizable, scalable, community-engaged process can support the development and distribution of accurate health information to help prevent knowledge gaps in communities.
