The film is produced by Peabody Award-winning filmmaker and journalist Bill Lichtenstein and follows the reporting of journalist Brooke Lewitas, who has spent the last two and a half years on an unprecedented investigation of the failed Massachusetts foster care, juvenile court, and care and protection systems – for decades ranked among the worst state child welfare systems in the country.

Since the 1980s, these systems have separated children from their families unnecessarily, effectively punishing poverty, domestic violence victims, and those with mental health problems. The state then places these children with strangers who are paid to care for them--in many cases, in institutions or group facilities--with little oversight or accountability. The system disproportionally impacts members of already marginalized communities, particularly Black families, Latinx families, those with disabilities, and those living in poverty. There has never been a systemic investigation into this issue which centers those impacted and features a wide variety of subject matter experts--until now. It is our hope that this project will bring desperately needed light to the dark corners of the child protection system.

The film, while still in production, has already been invited to screen as a “work in progress” at several film festivals.

“Vaccination” is a campaign to help address vaccine concerns by explaining why vaccines are safe, crucial to community health and save millions of lives annually. While the project includes Covid vaccination, it addresses ALL vaccines. The project centers on a broadcast documentary but includes short, simple video tools for health professionals and school officials to use when explaining these issues in order to create vaccine confidence.
