Introduction to grant writing, peer review, and funding mechanisms at nih

Marcel Salive, MD, MPH
National Institute on Aging, Rockville, MD

APHA 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo

This invited session will provide an overall introduction to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The National Institutes of Health is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world. In 2022, NIH invested most of its $45 billion appropriations in research seeking to enhance life, and to reduce illness and disability. NIH-funded research has led to breakthroughs and new treatments helping people live longer, healthier lives, and building the research foundation that drives discovery. The speakers will describe to the audience the grant application process at NIH, starting from identifying the appropriate funding opportunity followed by the steps after applying and the peer review process will discuss different techniques for successful grant writing, explain the main review components, provide hints for a successful grant application, and address areas of emphasis. Further, this session will explain the different grant funding mechanisms and provide examples of NIH Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) focusing on aging and collaborative research at NIH. Resources will be cited from public websites that can be used in developing the components of a grant application.

Abstract

Grant funding opportunities at the national institute on aging

Marcel Salive, MD, MPH
National Institute on Aging, Rockville, MD

APHA 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo

The National Institute on Aging, NIA, is part of the National Institutes of Health and supports aging research from basic science through clinical studies. Here you will learn about extramural research opportunities and how to apply for NIA funds. Specific grant mechanisms are available for individuals at different career stages, from trainees to senior investigators. NIA provides support for aging research, Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, and COVID-19 disease research in older adults. This presentation will discuss some common funding mechanisms currently peer-reviewed at NIH. Emphasis will be placed on selecting the right mechanism for an applicant’s career timing and trajectory, as well as some pre-submission hints and tips to facilitate the application process. The notice of funding opportunity announcements (NOFOs) and research priorities at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) will also be discussed.
