The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE), an international nursing organization working at the intersection of health and the environment, produced the Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Guidance for Clinicians or referred to as “ANHE’s PFAS toolkit” to address these gaps in nursing, clinical, and public health professional knowledge. ANHE’s PFAS toolkit was created to compile a brief user-friendly streamlined overview of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Guidance on PFAS exposure, testing, and clinical follow-up.
This presentation will overview the PFAS toolkit along with steps that public health professionals, nurses, and clinicians can immediately put into practice, including an exposure assessment screening tool that can be printed out and easily administered during client visits or in community health assessments. The PFAS toolkit provides timely information for nurses on how to safely address PFAS exposure within the limitations of current science, yet utilizing knowledge in order to take proactive steps. The session will additionally outline the policy recommendations and opportunities for advocacy to promote health protections relating to PFAS.
