Background: The capstone of public health education occurs through practicum experiences. Placements provide essential opportunities for students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings while addressing community health needs. Our program has facilitated over 500 student placements across diverse settings including governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, healthcare systems, global health, and community-based field work.

Objectives: This presentation examines a comprehensive analysis of public health practicum placements in the CEPH Accredited, Master of Public Health program at Grand Valley State University, a masters’ large university of 25,000 students, over a ten-year period (2015-2025).

Methods: We analyzed, using a mixed methods approach, the placement data, student evaluations, preceptor feedback, and long-term career outcomes using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Our findings revealed significant shifts in practicum focus areas, reflecting emerging public health priorities including climate change health impacts, digital health interventions, and pandemic preparedness. The data demonstrates increasing demand for interdisciplinary experiences combining traditional public health competencies with data science, policy analysis, and health equity frameworks.

Results: Student outcomes analysis indicated that structured practicum experiences correlate strongly with enhanced employment prospects. Including 78% of students reporting that their placement directly influenced their career trajectory. Community partner feedback highlighted substantial contributions to local health initiatives, including program evaluation, health communication campaigns, secondary data analysis critical to moving workplace projects forward through mututally beneficial experiences, and evidence-based interventions.

Conclusions: This review has demonstrated promising improvements in student satisfaction, preceptor engagement, and measurable community health impacts, providing valuable insights for other institutions seeking to optimize their practicum experiences.

Public Health Implications: Challenges identified include geographic disparities in placement opportunities, variable mentorship quality, pros and cons of facilitating online and virtual placements during COVID-19 years, and difficulties in addressing rapidly evolving workforce needs.
