"PICK YOUR PATH TO HEALTH": A National Public Health Campaign for Women of Color

Public health campaigns are important tools for improving women's health. The "Pick Your Path to Health" campaign of the Department of Health and Human Service's Office on Women's Health was designed to emphasize simple steps that women could take to improve their health. This national campaign is aimed at women of color. Ten Healthy People 2010 leading health indicators served as the initial issues for the campaign, however, through focus groups and interviews with the target audience, women indicated that the issues of spirituality and family needed to be added to the campaign. The campaign was launched in May 2000 with a Washington, DC-based national media event featuring community partner representatives, celebrities, congresswomen, and campaign spokeswomen. The launch was covered by a number of media sources including CNN Newsource Affiliate Service; CNN en Espanol; Black Radio Network; Univision; Heart and Soul, and Telemundo. The authors report on the development of a community tool kit that contains materials such as talking points that translate research findings into communication objectives, sample press releases and op-ed articles; radio and print public service announcements; fact sheets on women's health; tips on how to implement the campaign locally; and other collateral material. Authors will also discuss the development of audience driven campaign materials, including an English/Spanish day planner that provides culturally inclusive tips to improve women's health. The campaign has over 50 partners nationwide and has directly reached more than half a million women of color.

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn how to design and test public health materials for use with women from different ethnic groups.
