CDC’s School Health Index for Physical Activity, Healthy Eating, and Tobacco Free Lifestyle: A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide is a tool designed to help schools assess and improve their physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco-use prevention policies and programs in the context of a coordinated school health program. The history, purposes, and structure of the School Health Index will be described, along with the process of developing the second edition of the School Health Index, to be released in 2002. Changes made in the document, including the addition of items to assess a school's tobacco-use prevention policies and programs, will be described. Information that has been collected from education agencies, health departments, schools, and other programs across the nation about use of the School Health Index will be shared.
