A partnership for public health education between a school of nursing and a college of oriental medicine

This presentation will provide an overview of the relationship between the Oregon Health and Science University School of Nursing (SON) and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM). The relationship began ten years ago when both schools were involved in a joint community education project. The relationship grew over time, and now faculty from the Community Health/Public Health Specialty in the SON develop and teach the Public Health Seminar for senior level students at OCOM.. This presentation will discuss the history of the development of the course, including key administrative elements. It will describe the process used for team-teaching the course by PhD level faculty in the SON. The unique opportunities and challenges involved in engaging students of Oriental Medicine in the inter-disciplinary practice of Public Health and population based care will be presented. Preliminary results of a national survey of Colleges of Oriental Medicine concerning their curricula in Public Health will be included. Recommendations for replication of the model will be provided.
