Distributed learning in integrative medicine: A dynamic approach to postgraduate medical education

Traditional educational formats have to address the rapid increase in technology that has affected information delivery. The ability of instructor and students to be separated by time and space has been facilitated by these advances, creating new and enhanced learning opportunities. Medical knowledge is dynamic and clinicians are increasingly turning to the Internet for information, often in pace with their patients. Nowhere is this more evident than in the area of Integrative Medicine, where physicians need to maintain their knowledge of current conventional practice while often having to learn new information on complementary and alternative practices. The University of Arizona’s Associate Program in Integrative Medicine facilitates this learning by providing a 2-year distributed curriculum to healthcare practitioners across the country and internationally. A description of this program and how it has successfully served its learners will be provided.
