5076.0 Drug & Trade Policy & Pharmacy Services: Providing Safe Drugs and Services

Wednesday, October 31, 2012: 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Oral
This session addresses threats to patient and population risks of pharmaceutical practices in the US and around the globe. Proliferating dangerous counterfeit drugs threaten patient health especially in nations with little regulation. However, competing economic demands, legal rights, market pressures, weak regulatory mechanisms, international non-cooperation, and logistics hamper international control. One presentation documents these and states needs for remedies. Another describes increased direct marketing of drugs to consumers and shows aspects of this practice that should greatly concern pubic health officials and clinicians. The often-overlooked influences of nurses in marketing and using medicines is the subject of another presentation. The fourth paper demonstrates diminishing progression of kidney disease to end stage and mortality in a large prospective, controlled study of diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease. Use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ACEI/ARB) was followed in some patients and compared with others who did not receive this treatment.
Session Objectives: -Explore complex issues of international proliferation, surveillance, and regulation of dangerous counterfeit drugs to protect patients and global health. -Describe effectiveness of direct marketing of drugs to consumers. -Analyze roles of nurses in marketing, purchasing, and utilizing drugs. -Demonstrate risk reduction for among a large cohort of diabetic patients with late stage chronic kidney disease by use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin II receptor blockers.
