The health profile of foster children: Special children, special needs

Participants will learn about the grim health profile of foster children nationwide including their medical, developmental and mental health needs. The presenter will discuss specific common health problems found among foster children and highlight factors contributing to the poor health of foster children prior to and once in foster care and describe the standards of care for foster children as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Child Welfare League of America. Participants will learn about ENHANCE, a national model of comprehensive, multidisciplinary health services to all foster children in Syracuse, New York. The presenter also will describe the program's Home Visiting program that utilizes public health nurses to provide home-based developmental screening of young foster children and will share data gathered by the program on the developmental delays of children assessed by the program.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: (1) identify specific health issues presented by children in foster care; (2) have a higher index of suspicion for developmental and health problems among foster children; (3) recognize essential elements of quality health care for foster children; (4) know existing models of health care delivery to foster children Participants will learn about the grim health profile of foster children nationwide including their medical, developmental and mental health needs.
