Abstract #10291

Recruitment Challenges Being Met by HRSA Bureau of Health Professions

Henry Montes, MPH, Bureau of Health Professions/Division of Public Health and Allied Health, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), 5600 Fishers Lane, Room 8-101, Rockville, MD 20857, 301-443-6853, Hmontes@hrsa.gov

Over the past few years there has been a significant backlash to the practice of affirmative action in aiding racial and ethnic minorities in getting into the health professions. It has been at the federal level of government over these years that a steadfast policy position has been held in ensuring representation of under represented minorities in the health professions. The main organization responsible for carrying out these policies is the Bureau of Health Professions within the Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. In this presentation information will be provided on the efforts of the Bureau to maintain and enhance its work within its priorities of diversity, distribution, and quality improvements in health professions education and training. Discussion of currently supported health professions programs at the federal level will reveal a national policy of attempting to assure equity for under represented minorities in health professions education and training programs. Examples given will highlight such programs dealing with public health and preventive medicine disciplines.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, the participants in this session will be able to: 1. Identify Bureau of Health Professions' Programs that provide funding for Public Health education and training activities. 2. Recognize the Bureau priorities for applying for grants under these public health programs. 3. Describe the performance data needs that are requirements under the Bureau grant reporting systems for tracking minority recruitment and other measures
