Abstract #11297

Differences in estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) use by ethnicity: Results from the National Osteoporosis Risk Assessment (NORA) program

Lois E. Wehren, MD, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, University of Maryland, 660 West Red Wood Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, 410-706-2449, lwehren@som.umaryland.edu, Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, MD, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, and David Furman, PhD, Independent Contractor, West Point, PA 19486.

To be eligible for NORA, women had to be postmenopausal, without known osteoporosis or recent bone scan, and have a primary care physician. Although most participants (168,491; 91%) were Caucasian, substantial numbers of African-Americans (6990; 4%), Hispanics(5912; 3%), Asians (1676; 1%), and Native Americans (1528; 1%) provided information on ERT use. Caucasian women were most likely to be previous or current users; African-American women were most likely to have never used ERT. Native Americans and Caucasians were most likely to have used ERT for >10 years: Asian and African-American women were most likely to use ERT for <5 years. Native Americans and African-Americans were most likely to have stopped ERT >6 years ago. Even after adjustment for age the odds ratio for ERT use for each ethnic group is significantly less than that for Caucasians. The relation of socioeconomic status, education, and hysterectomy status to continued hormone use by ethnic group will be presented.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant in this session will be able to: 1. Define three measures of ERT usage in ethnic groups 2.Describe how ERT usage differs among ethnic groups using these measures. 3.Evaluate the impact of age, socioeconomic status, and other variables on differences in continued hormone use across ethnic groups
