Expanding the District of Columbia, Department of Health, Bureau of Injury and Disability Prevention's (BIDP) surveillance capacity to determine the incidence and prevalence of disability is necessary to make policy and program recommendations, establish program goals and objectives and raise community awareness. The BIDP Project 730 identified datasets from various sources to determine their utility in estimating the incidence and prevalence of secondary conditions in the personal care domain. A comprehensive examination of the nature of data and data collection methods of agencies that serve District residents with disabilities was conducted. Factors under consideration include target and actual population; use of data; disability and secondary condition variables; sociodemographic characteristics; data storage and data accessibility. An important area of consideration of data selection for inclusion in the surveillance system is the agency definition of disability and secondary conditions in personal care. This discussion will focus on strategies to evaluate data sources, techniques for use of data in their existing format, and reformatting of identified data sets.
