Photographs, as a visual element of graphic design and presentation, are important to the public health community because they help deliver critical information with more impact. With the availability of new digital imaging and database technologies, it is now easy to organize photo collections that document pressing issues and illustrate important program work around the world. Unfortunately, many advocates, mobilizers, and community leaders do not have the financial or organizational capacity to develop and manage a photo collection utilizing these tools. Health communicators often have to scrounge desperately at the last minute to find the right photo or settle for an image that has been used over and over. It can be very expensive to purchase a photo from a stock agency. That is why the Media/Materials Clearinghouse at the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs designed PHOTOSHARE as free internet resource for sharing images among colleagues and organizations in international development. PHOTOSHARE is an online database of photographs related to population, health, and development. The web site allows visitors to easily browse more than 3,000 images and request free copies for non-profit, educational use. The size and scope of the database continually expands as individuals and NGOs contribute photos from around the world. Communication specialists, editors, graphic designers, and publishers will especially find this service useful for the relevant photo subjects, speedy response to requests, and cost-free images. The APHA presentation will include a demonstration of the site as it actually appears on the Internet.

Learning Objectives: 1) Identify and utilize PHOTOSHARE as a web-based resource for presentation and materials development; 2) Perform on-line queries and submit requests for free digital images via PHOTOSHARE ; 3) Contribute to the value of PHOTOSHARE by sharing personal/organizational photos; 4) Describe PHOTOSHARE services to colleagues who can benefit from this unique resource
