Abstract #11450

Performance Improvement in USAID's Family Planning/Reproductive Health Programs: Why Now?

Estelle E. Quain, PhD, Office of Population, USAID, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Ronald Reagan Building, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20523, 202/712-4463, equain@usaid.gov

USAID’s family planning and reproductive health programs have long been providing training as a means to improving access to and quality of services. While this training has markedly improved provider skill and knowledge, added attention needs to be given to its impact on service delivery and provider performance. Performance improvement is a systematic approach that analyzes the root causes of a performance problem and determines the most effective intervention to address the problem. The importance of performance improvement as a means to achieving results and maximizing USAID's investment will be presented. The way in which USAID's cooperating agencies will apply performance improvement to the implementation of family planning and reproductive health programs in developing countries will also be described.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify performance improvement and why USAID is interested in this approach. 2. Describe how USAID cooperating agencies will apply performance improvement to family planning and reproductive health programs
