The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has released a new Toxicological Profile for DDT, DDE, and DDD. The document provides a critical assessment of all relevant information in the broad areas of exposure, toxicology, and epidemiology. ATSDR is charged with the implementation of a program of toxicology mandated by the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA) (ATSDR, 1989). Listing of a chemical under this program triggers the development of a chemical specific toxicological profile. p,p'-DDT is number ten on ATSDR's 1999 Priority List of Hazardous Substances. The toxicological profile can be used by public health practitioners to quickly find relevant information to assess human health risks. This presentation will highlight some of the more recent findings about reproductive, developmental, and endocrine effects of DDT, DDE, and DDD which are discussed in greater detail in the toxicological profile.
Learning Objectives: 1) Assess the human health risks of exposure to DDT and its metabolites. 2) Evaluate the tradeoffs involved when deciding whether to use DDT in malaria vector control
