School nurses play a critical role in assessing the overall health of the student body, as well as its individual members, while also providing health services. An emerging question is the appropriate role for school-based nurses in protecting children from environmental health risks. A survey of 1,000 school-based nurses in New York State was administered by the Healthy Schools Network, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of SUNY to determine what school nurses knew and were doing about medications used for behavioral problems; asthma; allergy control; and if/how they were promoting healthier indoor environments. The results and implications of the survey will be discussed
