Abstract #12023

Community health workers: a public health priority

John Auerbach, Boston Public Health Commission, 1010 Mass. Avenue, 6th Floor, Boston, MA 02118, (617) 534-5395, N/A

John Auerbach will discuss his involvement in making Outreach Education a Public Health priority. As Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission, he led a series of community hearings in Boston in 1998. Commission members were told by residents that more Community Health Workers were needed to reach the populations at greatest risk for health problems. Stabilized funding for existing positions and access to appropriate trainings were key concerns. As a result of these hearings the commission charged a Community Health Worker taskforce to develop recommendations for strengthening the field of Outreach Education.

Learning Objectives: a) Participants will discuss how the City's health department responded to the needs of residents in Boston by charging a community health worker taskforce to develop recommendations for strengthening the field of outreach education
