Elizabeth T. Anderson, DrPH, RN and Zena Mercer, MS. School of Nursing, University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Blvd, Galveston, TX 77555-1029, (409)772-8253, etanders@utmb.edu

Nurse practitioner programs across the U.S. are attempting to include essential community health content within their curricula. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty recognizes the importance of this content by including several community-focused elements in its standards for practice. While some of the programs have community health experts involved in the planning and teaching of the content, many are grappling with how to incorporate the community health concepts. This presentation will describe a pioneering nurse practitioner program that has included required community health courses for over ten years and has recently (over the past two years) delivered the entire sequence of community health courses via the Internet. The courses, titled "Community as Partner," present the process of working with a community to improve health. In addition to a description of the program (content covered and methods of delivery), the outcomes of that program will be presented. Suggested ways for public health nurses and nurse practitioners to work together will be included in the presentation.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the value of web-based teaching in community health; 2. Recognize the importance of community health content to the nurse practitioner; and, 3. Discuss how the roles of the public health nurse and the nurse practitioner are complementary
