In order to conduct culture-specific education around fish contamination issues within diverse fishing populations in Los Angeles, the California Department of Health Services, in collaboration with community groups, created a participatory approach that builds local partnerships between Latino, Korean, Pilipino, and Cambodian community based organizations and state, local and federal agencies.
Components of the model include: 1. Conducting extensive outreach and needs assessment 2. Conducting a public education forum about the issue 3. Convening a multi-disciplinary work group to design, develop and test materials 4. Providing stipends for community participation 5. Seeking additional grants for community based organization projects 6. Providing a train the trainers workshop for community capacity building 7. Piloting four health education activities 8. Evaluating our collective efforts
This project serves as a model that can be applied to other health education efforts that seek to successfully partner with underserved communities. All components of the model will be discussed in detail. Examples of materials developed will be provided.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to 1) Describe an innovative participatory model for creating culture-specific educational campaigns, 2) List two approaches to creating partnerships with CBOs, 3) Identify two creative multi-ethnic outreach and capacity building strategies
