Transgender refers to individuals that do not conform to traditional gender norms, and in effect can vary in regards to gender identity, physical form, and desire for medical intervention. Beginning efforts are being directed to identify the unique needs and concerns of these individuals, and to develop culturally sensitive programs that will be successful in treating these individuals within diverse medical contexts. Many transgender men and women may have experienced discrimination and/or harassment (or are in fear of it) within health care settings. As such, these individuals may not potentially seek health care until the problem worsens considerably. In addition, individuals within health care settings my not have sufficient knowledge of transgender persons to adequately handle certain medical situations. The Los Angeles County Transgender Task Force, with the help of allied individuals and organizations, has developed a program that educates health care workers and related professionals on the issues faced by transgender men and women. They also present strategies that will improve the level of care given to these individuals. Crucial issues and strategies from this program will be presented to enlighten health care workers on the important issues involved in transgender care.
