It is estimated that by the year 2030, the proportion of people over the age of 65 in this country will almost double. This surge in the population of "older" individuals has prompted a significant research growth focusing on the needs of this population. Until recently, gerontologists have neglected the special needs of older gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) individuals living in the United States. The needs of older GLBT persons will be the primary focus of the presentation with a secondary emphasis on introducing participants to this diverse, unexplored sub-population. The presentation will present a review of the literature, a digest of interviews with national experts, and the findings yielded by discussions with experts on aging. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to: 1) identify what is known and unknown about aging GLBT individuals, 2) dispel myths regarding older GLBT persons, 3) understand the trends among the older population in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and 4) recognize the deficiencies in the area of older GLBT research and services.
