Lourdes de la Peza, BA, Management Sciences for Health, Cuernavaca, Mexico, 617-524-7799, ldelapeza@compuserve.com

In a competitive environment, if a health services organization is to survive, it must understand the needs and expectations of its clients and the community and respond to them before a competitor takes its place. On the other hand, providing high quality services for clients who demand them involves greater investment that may be difficult for organizations with scarce resources.

This presentation will describe how the Ministry of Health clinics in Peru have been able to reduce the cost of quality improvement interventions . In collaboration with Management Sciences for Health, the MOH has reduced the unit cost of its quality interventions in Peru by 90% using the Managing for Quality self-implementation modules. The presentation will describe the methodology for using this quality improvement tool to solve common problems identified by the MOH. The methodology supports health providers working each month to solve one common problem by themselves on a regular and systematic basis. The presentation will share the results of applying this quality improvement methodology in 54 service delivery units in six health networks in Peru and discuss the role that quality improvement plays in supporting programmatic sustainability.

Learning Objectives: After the presentation, the participant will be able: · To describe how quality of care contributes to organizational sustainability · To recognize the risks associated with failure to make investments in quality improvements. · To understand the essential elements of a methodology to improve quality in health networks that is highly cost-effective and requires modest level of investment
