Care for dually eligible older adults with dementia: State Medicaid program perspective

The Massahusetts Division of Medical Assistance (the state Medicaid program) and the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration are developing the new MassHealth Senior Care Options program. Integrated care newtorks known as Senior Care organizations (SCOs) will be required to provide all Medicare and Medicaid covered services to dually eligible older adults in Massachusetts, including individuals with dementia. This presentation will describe principles underlying this new integrated program from the perspective of the state Medicaid program. Efforts by Medicaid program officials to take into account the special needs and risks associated with cognitive impairment in the dually eligible population will also be described.

Learning Objectives: Understand how a state Medicaid program views the importance of developing an integrated care program for dually eligible individuals. Describe how in Massachusetts the state Medicaid program has taken into account the risk associated with having dementia in its program development for dually eligible individuals
