Examining the potential role of external organizations and donors in strengthening immunization financing in developing countries

This presentation will focus on potential roles and mechanisms to guide the international community's efforts to assist countries implement sustainable financing strategies and achieve national immunization program objectives. The session will provide an analysis of country experiences and will examine the role and impact of external funding sources and organizations on immunization financing. Likewise, recommendations and potential options for different regions and donors, as well as the international community at large, will be discussed. The presenter will describe the impact of the introduction of new vaccines and technologies, reduced donor funding, decentralization, and other health sector reform measures. The presentation is based, in part, on case studies conducted by the Partnerships for Health Reform (PHR) project in collaboration with key partners (e.g., WHO, PAHO) in Morocco, Bangladesh, Colombia, and Cote d'Ivoire. In each country, the case study examines the current financing strategies (in terms of adequacy, sustainability, and impact on coverage, quality, equity, and efficiency); estimates the global costs of the program together with the costs of adding new vaccines or for other planned changes; and analyzes and weighs options to improve the financing and sustainability of each immunization program.
