The New York Health Resources and Services Administration(HRSA) field office has recognized the high morbidity and mortality resulting from asthma in the populations residing in Region II(New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands). Review of data from HRSA supported health centers in Region II reveal that asthma is the leading cause of medical visits by children, and the third leading disesase by diagnosis. In their 1998 report, the state Title V Maternal and Child Health Programs have provided information showing hospitalization rates for children with ashtma are significantly higher than the Healthy People 2010 objectives. New York City has reported the highest asthma prevalence rate of any county in the nation. The New York field office has identified asthma as a top priority and has taken several specific action steps to reduce the impact asthma is having in Region II. These steps include(d):1)Develop and conduct a baseline survey of key informants in Region II state departments of health on their asthma data, prevention programs, and suggstions that they may have for HRSA. 2)Convene a HRSA key grantees and stakeholder Region II Asthma Summit in May 2000. this meeting will promote information exchanges and assist each jurisdiction in Region II to develop an Asthma Action Plan. Proceedings will be published. 3)Develop and support, in partnership with Region II Environmental Protection Agency, an Asthma Pilot Project at community health centers, demonstating the effectiveness of using both environmental abatement and improved primary care interventions strategies on specific outcome measures.
