Teen Relationships: A Curriculum Evaluation
Based on data collected in a series of focus groups with adolescents, three topics of special concern to adolescents were identified: (a) sexual harassment, (b) sexual coercion (including date rape), and (c) a need for guidance in how to initiate and maintain positive relationships. Using a theoretically-grounded approach (Social Learning Theory), we developed a "Relationships" curriculum, addressing each of the three topics with a brief (25-30 minutes long) video (with embedded discussion questions) and a teacher’s guide. The series was evaluated with a randomized wait-list control design. The sexual harassment program specifically illustrates the damage that can result from harassment, what constitutes harassment, and what can be done about it. The sexual coercion video includes dramatic footage on how to avoid, and how to deal, with sexual coercion. The healthy relationships video presents real teens talking about relationships and responding to taped interviews and role plays done by teens. All three programs were designed to change attitudes, beliefs, normative expectations, and self-efficacy concerning behaviors related to each topic. Findings and implications for further interventions will be discussed.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: a)Understand what constitutes harassment b)Describe situations that increase the risk of sexual coercion c) Identify healthy and unhealthy relationships
