John C. Parmigiani, Compliance Programs, Healthcare Computing Strategies, 9530 Westwood Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21042-3728, 410 750 2060, jcparmigiani@hcs-is.com

The Internet can be useful to public health practitioners because it is a low cost medium for transmitting health care data. However, security and privacy considerations are often perceived as barriers to using the internet for transmitting data. Recent federal regulations under HIPAA, as well as HCFA policy pronouncements, have attempted to provide requirements and prescribe necessary precautions that must be implemented to mitigate the inherent risks of using the Internet to transmit data. The presentation will present both the concepts and guidance about what steps public health practitioners should take to insure compliance.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation participants will be able to: 1. Identify key health care privacy regulations that may impact their organization. 2. Describe the process for developing the regulations 3. Specify steps that can be taken to comply with the regulations

Keywords: Privacy, HCFA
