In response to an expressed need for a graduate program in public health, Des Moines University (DMU) – Osteopathic Medical Center developed and began delivering graduate level programming October 1999. DMU’s Master of Public Health program was developed to support building the public health infrastructure through a practice-oriented curriculum. At the request of public health administrators around the State of Iowa, the University built a curriculum based on public health core functions and essential services. This competency orientation has served to develop a campus - community partnership focused on developing the skills of those actually delivering public health services across the state. Des Moines University is committed to removing geographic boundaries and increasing access to those in the field. The program was therefore developed using the application of interactive video and computer technologies (including web support sites) utilizing a high-speed cable network (Iowa Communications Network) and other distance education technologies. This session compares student outcomes and student satisfaction when using traditional course delivery vs distance course delivery.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. use public health core functions and essential services as a foundation for builing a practice based curriculum 2. appreciate the application of interactive video, through the utilization of a high speed cable network(Iowa Communications Network)in delivering public health programming to rural locations 3. understand the importance of the use of multiple technologies in course delivery 4.
