Objective: The objective of this proposal is to reduce car accidents among high-risk groups such as minorities, young adults, and the elderly in the state of Alabama. This project proposes to do so by reviewing the transportation literature; stratifying transportation data by age, gender, race, and health-related behaviors; surveying a sample of 1,200 participants; and conducting quantitative data analysis to identify health and behavioral predictors associated with safety and injury among the identified high risk groups. Methods: The proposed study will consist of four phases over 12 months. Phase I (2 months)- health and driving habit surveys will be developed and pilot-tested. Phase II (2 months)- the transportation literature will be reviewed and stratified by age, gender, race, and heath related behaviors. Phase III (5 months)- 1,200 Alabama road users will be surveyed as to their health and driving behaviors. Phase IV (3 months)- results will be analyzed to identify segments of the population that are at-risk for being involved in a car accident and the health and behavioral factors associated with car crashes. Significance: Little information is known about the effectiveness of providing culturally sensitive, age appropriate transportation information to minorities and other high-risk groups. This proposal will specifically target these segments of the population in an effort to assess their health and driving behaviors. The information gathered will enable researchers to develop tailored interventions that will lower car injury rates among these groups.

Learning Objectives: "At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. List four behavioral factors associated with involvement in car accidents. 2. Identify five health-related factors associated with car accidents. 3. Identify two segments of the population that are most at risk for involvement in car accidents
