Cultivating Peace in Salinas: Process and Evaluation

Rachel Davis, MSW, Larry Cohen, MSW, and Morgen Humes, MSW. Prevention Institute, 1181 Colusa Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94707, (510) 528-4482, rachel@preventioninstitute.org

Prevention Institute facilitated a planning process and developed a community-wide violence prevention framework with the City of Salinas, California. This process played a key role in building community support and broadening involvement in violence prevention. In the case of creating an action plan, community input and commitment is essential. Similarly, evaluation is critical to the development of any community-wide effort. Not only does feedback strengthen the program, but community members who play an active role are more likely to make a project successful.

The presentation will include a discussion of the Cultivating Peace in Salinas collaborative process, with an emphasis on the use of evaluation in shaping the framework. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation results will be presented. Two key areas for discussion will include identifying key evaluation questions and how results were used to enhance the use of the framework in developing a detailed action plan for the community. Finally, attention will be paid to how planning and evaluation can strengthen all violence prevention efforts within a community.

Participants will analyze framework development and the role evaluation played in this process. In addition they will be able to apply Prevention Institute methodology such as the Spectrum of Prevention, the Evolution of Prevention and 8 Steps to Effective Collaboration to developing and evaluating a comprehensive violence prevention framework. Participants will be able to describe the reciprocal process between violence prevention strategy development and evaluation.
