Objective: To enhance cultural and linguistic appropriateness of DOH's Women's Health Fact Cards by assessing needs and preferences among women of Chinese origin in NYC and health care providers that service this population.
Background: The New York City (NYC) Department of Health develops culturally and linguistically appropriate public health materials for non-English speaking populations. Reproductive Health Fact cards exist in English and Spanish. The Chinese Community expressed a need for women's health information. Many continue to communicate in their native language and maintain traditional beliefs. The fact cards were an appropriate choice to fill this need. This presentation provides an overview of methods employed to adapt the materials for women of Chinese origin living in NYC.
Methodology: A snowball sample of 16 health care providers was recruited for two focus groups. The focus groups set priorities, identified common health perceptions, and determined strategies to reach Chinese women. A bi-lingual, self administered, survey was then developed and distributed to subjects at selected sites facilitated by a Chinese speaking moderator. The survey will sample approximately 75 women of Chinese origin, ages 18-45, recruited from the major Chinese ethnic enclaves in NYC. It will ascertain the women's health priorities, perceptions of appropriateness of the health materials and validate provider information.
Results/Conclusions: Survey results will be available for presentation in Fall 2000. Findings will be used to adapt and refine translated fact cards. Lessons learned and benefits of involving the community in the development of educational print materials will be discussed.
Learning Objectives: Define strategies for adapting existing resources for use in culturally and linguistically distinct communities. Identify benefits of involving the community in the development of educational print materials
