The Bienestar Health Program is a school-based multi-component intervention program to reduce risk factors for type II diabetes in 4th grade Mexican-American children in San Antonio, Texas. The program was designed to enhance participant's self efficacy in adopting healthy lifestyles via skill based education following social-cognitive theory. The program has four components: classroom health curriculum, school cafeteria program, after-school health club, and parental health education with culturally appropriate activities. The expected outcomes of the program are increased level of physical fitness, reduced dietary fat intake, increased fiber and fruit intake, and low body fat. The presentation will address issues in the areas of culturally appropriate programming, use of after-school activities, parental involvement, and program evaluation and provide preliminary support for program effectiveness.
