Women make up one of the fastest growing groups of newly infected persons with HIV infection in this country, and in many respects, the most challenging. Barriers to care including poverty, domestic violence, chemical dependency, high rates of incarceration and reticence to disclose HIV status continue to force new models of care. New initiatives including perinatal transmission reduction especially in women with no or inadequate prenatal care, coordination of mental health, chemical dependency treatment and medical services for women, their partners, and children, and antiretroviral medication adherence strategies specifically for women will be addressed.
